Barbie Has Her Own Fan Club!

It is not surprising that an icon, such as Barbie, would eventually wind up with her own fan club. After all, it is only fitting that a teenage fashion doll who has entertained little girls for decades, gone on to embark on any number of careers, and last but not least inspired gladiator like bidding wars on eBay should be taken a bit more serious than the average doll that might be gracing your daughter's bedroom. In addition to the foregoing, her ubiquitous sense of fashion, numerous accessories, and supporting friends and family group ensure that Barbie is here to stay for a long, long time to come. Serious collectors have therefore banded together to ensure that their special place in Barbie's life and lore be rewarded with a supporting arm from Mattel Corporation!

It is truly astounding how Mattel has kept the reigns on all things Barbie, from licensing paper dolls to now administering the membership requirements of the Barbie fan club. If you thought this was just the run of the mill club anyone can join, pay a few dollars, and be rewarded with quarterly glossy magazines and catalogs, think again! Here are some amazing, and important, facts about the Barbie Fan Club.

How much does it cost to join?

In order to join the club, you will need to pay $19.95 by credit card. No other methods of payment are accepted.

How long does the membership last?

You will be a member until December 31st, 2006. At the end of the term or slightly before you will be given the opportunity to renew your membership.

Is membership limited?

Yes, it is. First and foremost, only collectors are invited to join. Of these collectors, only 7,000 will be chosen to become members. Collectors who reside in the Sudan, Cuba, Iran, North Korea or Libya are eligible to join.

What benefits are available to members?

Members will receive credit toward purchases from the club's shop. Quite possibly the most coveted aspect of membership is the eligibility to purchase one exclusive club doll. It is important to note that neither is the price of the doll included in the price of joining the club, nor is joining any guarantee that you will actually receive such a doll " if you decide to order it. It appears that only 4,000 dolls of the exclusive line are manufactured for purchase by club members, and while not every member of the club will order the doll, the competition may still be rather stiff. On the community side of the club, members will have the opportunity to interact via bulletin board and "life chat" feature with other collectors.

Are the limitations to what you can do?

As a matter of fact, there are. While this club is specifically geared toward collectors, Mattel goes to great lengths to ensure that their exclusive club offerings of available dolls will not be cheapened by pre-selling, and attempts to give every collector a fair shake at choosing to keep or choosing to sell the doll by requiring the collectors to wait until after the dolls are issued before offering them for sale on the open market. Mattel is very firm in reserving the right to suspend and cancel the memberships of those collectors who might be trying to skirt around any of the rules it imposes on its members.

For a serious collector, the Barbie Fan Club is a good place to be after all, you will be able to interact with other serious collectors, and you may also learn a little about the inside workings of Mattel. Similarly, you will have the option of purchasing club-only editions of Barbie dolls, which will become collector's items at some point in the future.
