Barbie Buzz Words and Other Terminology Defined

Are you confused by the Barbie buzz? Are you scouring EBay and other auction sites for new dolls, but are almost tempted to rip out your hair as you read through all the abbreviations and acronyms that have become the accepted lingo of collectors everywhere? If so, do not despair because you are not alone. As a matter of fact, there has been a whole list of terms developed that collectors have used to quickly and precisely communicate what it is they are looking for and what they have on hand for sale.

Here are some Barbie buzz words and other terminology defined. First and foremost there are the various classifications of Barbie.

Collector Edition Barbie Doll. This doll has been designed, packaged, and marketed to the collectors market.

Customized Edition Barbie Doll. This doll has been made to order by a certain retailer.

Limited Edition Barbie Doll. These are collector edition dolls, and sometimes customized edition dolls, which are not widely produced by the manufacturer.

Modern Barbie Doll. A modern doll is a Barbie that was manufactured after " and including " the year 1973.

OOAK Barbie Doll. One of a kind Barbie dolls may be crafted on demand by an artist or fashion designer. They are not always considered collectibles, unless the artist or designer is very well known.

Ponytail Barbie Doll. This is the very first collection of dolls ever made. Generally speaking, there are about six different styles available. They are considered vintage dolls.

Vintage Barbie Doll. This term usually refers to any doll manufactured before and including the year 1972.

After you have classified the Barbie in your possession, you might also want to talk about the condition it is in.

If you read that someone claims their doll is A/O, it means that it is all original. For a collector this is an important distinction, since it all but guarantees that the doll is in good condition as no restorative work had to be done.

If a doll is advertised as HTF, it simply means that it is hard to find. You might not want to take the seller at face value until you have taken the time to research the market a little bit more yourself. After all, you do not want to pay large sums of money of something that might not be as rare as you had assumed.

If your doll is said to be M/C, it means simply that it is "mint and complete" which may indicate that it does not have a box to call its home, but all the pieces it came with are present and accounted for, and it is in the same condition as you would expect it to be if you had just taken it out of the box.

Perhaps your doll falls into the "MIB" (mint in box) category, which refers to any doll, which is in perfect condition, will be sold in its original packaging, but where the doll has been taken out of the package and handled.

If your doll is "NRFB", it means that it has not been removed from the box it came in. The packaging is all original, intact, and human hands have not touched the doll since it left the factory.

If your doll is said to be "OSS" it means that she is dressed in the original swimsuit she wore when she was packaged. You may have lost the package, but an OSS doll is at times as coveted as a MIB doll, when the box cannot be found.

Once the kind of Barbie and the condition it is in are clear to you, you might also stumble across some terms that seem to make no sense to you.

For example, what are "butt markings?" Well, as a matter of fact the manufacturer has taken to putting marks on a Barbie's derrire, which oftentimes help in identifying the kind of doll you are dealing with.

If you run across any other terms or acronyms that simply do not seem to make sense, just ask the seller. She or he will be glad to explain it to you!
